Spiders & Scorpions
May 15, 2008As some of you may know I avoid watching the news, I don’t even read newspapers, read it online. This might sound strange to you perhaps a bit infantile but hear me out.
In South Africa propaganda has always been rife, yes I know it is the same world wide, but from my experience we excel beyond reasonable doubt at it.
Our schools teach warped history, our educational system is up the creek where by they have changed the syllabus to allow for a higher pass rate all of this is coated with “congrats everyone our school pass rates are on the up, we now have 60% of school leavers passing their final exams”. Congrats indeed but what does that really mean?
I am not negative by nature, right now I know I may come across as such, this is fine, there is positivity in negativity how ever you may see it. Don’t get me wrong, I love South Africa, it’s beauty and its people, but the reality is far different to what you read in the papers both nationally and internationally.
The reality is that everyone is crying out that our president, one Mr Mbeki, is fired for his “There is no problem in Zimbabwe, we do not have a crime problem, HIV/AIDS is not an epidemic, unemployment is not a problem” stance. (Sorry sir but I think you need a new spin doctor…)
Mandela was quoted this week saying “Take note of the lessons from the past my nation and learn from them, do not do what we fought so hard to overcome” (A wise man who is still a “terrorist” in the eyes of some countries???)
Jacob Zuma, the president of the leading political party ANC (African National Congress) was shocked to find so many homeless whites and mixed race humans on the streets and in unemployment offices, he thought that they were invincible and that the Affirmative Action didn’t have a bad side affect. He is also on trial yet again for fraud and corruption now that the rape charges miraculously disappeared. (Sir I think you need to read different reports, perhaps the unemployment one and not how to get out of jail free)
South Africa’s Scorpions, similar to the FBI in America, has been officially disbanded, why? Because apparently they have been unpatriotic in their actions by targeting politicians in government. The Scorpions go after white collar crime and gangsters such as our very own Mafia, they do not do it by race, political standing or just certain people, they investigate everyone no matter who you are. So now they have been disbanded, why would the government do this unless they are worried about being caught out?
The politicians that have been caught out were thrown into jail, they receive five course meals, satellite TV, mobile phones and wait for it… they are released within 3 months after reportedly stealing millions to take up their positions once again in government.
Why do I want to leave South Africa so desperately? Because I can’t take this negativity any more, always making sure the doors are locked and the security gates are closed, driving our cars with the windows up, putting on alarms, carrying Mace (Pepper spray/Tear gas) where ever we go. Because I feel that in another land I will be able to glean more positive energy that I could use for the greater good…
There are no “safe” places here, they are all high crime areas, my area was once classed as safe now it is like everywhere else. The complex next to me had a gun break in better known as robbery with big weapons. In South Africa, everyone knows the sound of a gun shot; People fear other people; We are taught that if someone is bleeding or hurt we do not touch them or go near them, why? Because most of our nation is suffering from AIDS and HIV. We are becoming a nation of non carers, a nation that looks out for number one and number one only and THAT makes me sad beyond words.
Do you know that as a South African in order to get visa’s for certain countries we need to have our lungs scanned for TB and AIDS test results with us when we apply? I am grateful that I have neither.
The reality is that this is not only South Africa, it is world wide, I just don’t know what I can do, if I can do anything at all, to change what is happening here. I will continue doing what I am in hope that some light shines through the dark cobwebs that society finds itself in, we as a nation need to stand up, we as a world need to stand up for what we know in our hearts to be right. I say these negative things not to be negative but rather to incite action in peoples hearts. There will always be problems in our world we can not run from that reality but if we stand up, stand together, perhaps it could change, perhaps these problems will become less.
I don’t watch the news, I read and take an over all look at what is going on and I see the true reality through my eyes and my interpretations, I give myself a chance to process what the information means to me and what is fact.
Why do I want to leave?
Fact is that South Africa has really big spiders, as big as your hand with teeth as large as the ones in your mouth, and I want out…. no that is NOT my hand on the right, I run when I see them… problem is they are often faster than I am!

Wow. I was so taken with the photo of your road the previous entry, imagining how lovely it must be to live in such a spot. And, then, today’s blog. Wow. I can’t imagine living with these pressures.
And, that was before I saw the spider! Now, this is why I don’t believe in God. What would he/she have been thinking to create such a thing??!!
Oh, I’m so amazed what people can handle on a daily basis. You need courage on a journey, don’t you?
lol agreed, now that we have fly swatters and bug spray what is the purpose! When I meet him I will ask him to take them back I think they were a glich in the matrix!
SA is indeed beautiful, I love it, just don’t think I can stay here for long periods of time quite possibly because I have experienced what is out there and know the difference. That is the sad part for me, people who live here and who have never been to distant shores know no different, they are used to it. It’s world over…
I read an article the other day that said South Africans are Accidental Buddhists, we don’t treasure our possessions anymore, we treasure our lives and believe in living them to the fullest… I have to agree with the article… and tbh quite a few of us have the Buddha physique
Courage on every road in life is nothing without a smile
Thanks for your thoughts as always, A
What… with all the lions and elephants wandering around, you’re worried about a few little spiders? Sheesh! :oP
Seriously, I read posts like this and I am reminded how ungrateful we who live in America can be. Yes, we have a biased media with an agenda, corrupt government officials, racism, gang violence, disease, poverty… and even tarantulas (scary-looking but mostly harmless). But the degree to which these things are present and the freedoms we have to do something about most them–at least as far as they affect us–are quite different.
And what can we do but exactly what you’re doing; be examples of a better way?
lol eeeek Tarantulas… see the big difference is that I can ride Eli the Elephant and Simba well he is just cute and more like a hot water bottle… Spidey is kinda sneaky and jumps on you when you least expect it… hmm now that I think of it so did Simba just the other day!!!
You are right again, each place has its faults, there are places far worse than SA, our neighbouring country included… all we can really do is do what we are doing, creating a network of lightworkers who are underground and try to change societies framework in hope that one day it will come round and heal…
Hmph now I will have to avoid sleeping in fear of that Tarantula thing visiting me in my dreams!! EEEEK
Dito Robert’s Comment. It sounds horrendous over in SA. I’ve always wanted to visit SA, but I have some reservations now. Keep praying SF - is there no way you can go back to Brittain or to some other country? Why is there such an HIV epidemic? Are people being educated about the disease or do some really believe that raping woman will immune them to the disease, as I saw recently on a documentary? Why is crime so high? And the spiders - we we all have those, but are they in your home? Oh my goodness, keep your light shining brightly lil sis - and my light will continue to shine for you!
Peace, Light and Love,
CordieB.
BTW, I forgot to say, . . . Love your new look. It’s quiter refreshing.
Thanks Cordie - felt I needed a symbolic change, it is my third and no doubt won’t be my last
SA as a tourist is beautiful and cheap just hang with a South African who is street wise, you are welcome any time
Sadly that documentary is spot on, the true gravity of the situation is that our Health Minister is a fan of a Matthias Rath (BBC’s take on our Health Minister and the take on Rath and his friend our Minister) and believes that garlic and beetroot are the way to go regarding healing AIDS/HIV - subsequently Anti Viral treatments are not delivered to the people.
The epidemic originally began because of the fact that contraception is against the tribal beliefs. The belief is that, if you fall pregnant, it is seen as a gift by the Ancestors to make you rich (long story, remind me if you want). By using contraceptives the Ancestors get angry and diminish your manhood.
I am sad in telling you this I will not put it here but you read more here The SA Cure It is the belief that has gone on for centuries but has been adopted by Tribal Doctors, they tell those suffering from AIDS/HIV that the cure is attainable, the younger the better. That article is old, the new numbers will make you sick for it has practically doubled.
Crime is high because there is no respect, people see how easy it is and they follow suit. It is easier to make money through crime than to find a job… there are not many jobs around so recruiting into the crime field is quite high. It is one of the areas I tried to work on when I was last here so we’ll see if it catches on - think the company I used to initiate it though is just after the money as always - sad. The other factor is that the punishment for crime is practically non existent…
Thanks for your prayers and light sis, I send it back with always positive thoughts and smiles
This is the world it is up to us to find a way to make a difference even if it is only a stepping stone for the next generation…
SF, I read the article, and I am heart broken. We live here with our so called poverty and fights for rights, while there are so many people dying and children being raped - these people need to be educated. The assailents should bear consequences for these crimes. I wish there were something I could do other than simply shine a light. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be thinking of ways I might possibly be able to help.
Peace, Light and Love,
CordieB.
Cordie, I couldn’t agree more, I don’t normally share the intimate details, I felt bad because if you are anything like me your heart would break and it did, for that I am sorry. I am not the barer of bad news, I don’t do it well but rather positivity.
I think positively on it everyday trying to come up with a solution but I realise that not one person can make the changes required, instead it is a nation of those, those who want to make a difference, that will step by step alter what needs to change.
The assailants need to feel the consequences not get suspended sentences of 3 to 6 months only to be released to do it again and again. The hopelessness of the nation lies in the fact that anyone who tries to make a stand get their feet cut off from under them, the Scorpions a prime example. The government feels shame in its lacking so it tries to hide it, covering it up with gimical propaganda - how can they put anyone behind bars when the majority of those in government are also out on suspended sentences?
Education is key, it is in part legacy to Apartheid and legacy to the new government. People (all people) were taught to think a certain way and now they can’t get out of history. Our police force bully and attack people… they say “what is this country coming to”… I say but who taught them? The government that went before 94 used the same tactics, there is no difference…
Less blame and more action coupled with education is the only way I can see this amazing country healing.
Keep the light shining for it is felt in Africa, each star lightens the night sky till one day the sun shines once more.
Thanks for your kind words my friend as always they bring a smile to my face… as you say … Peace, Light and Love always Mwah!
Aud: What sadness and hopelessness there, in so many ways. I agree; I am very sad for those that have never seen other shores; that know life to not ever be different for themselves; who may have even given up all hope for themselves and others. Your desire to live elsewhere IS your hope, your resolve, as well as your willingness to make a difference in what ever way that you can, albeit small or a stepping stone; any step forward is a step. We here in the US, as I have said in the past, can easily detach ourselves from the goings on in the world, and as I age, I have learned to be a more critical thinker, to not consume everything that I see and read in the media. We also have our own propaganda machine at work here. Thinking of you with warm thoughts, in your quest for justice…..V.
V Thanks for your kind words as always - I believe that the propaganda machine is in every country, there is no way to get around it apart from all standing together, which is starting to happen. There is an awareness that is taking over the world, one by one people are arising from their slumber within societies walls, seeing the world as it really is. It is not necessarily justice that I am after it is more that awareness. People often hide from it because they feel if they accept the truth they will feel overwhelming helplessness and hopelessness… awareness that it is possible and that there are more of us… that is my mission
